JEFFERSON CITY -- An overturned camper backed up traffic on Highway 50 East of Jefferson City for an hour and a half Wednesday evening.

The driver, Earl Rice of Gerald, Mo. was taken to Capitol Region Medical Center with moderate injuries after he lost control of his truck, swerved off the road and flipped over.

Rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to get the driver out. Police say he was "alert the whole time, talkative throughout."

The accident happened just before 5 p.m. near County Road 603 and backed up traffic in both directions. About 80 feet of guardrail was damaged in the accident.

I can't tell exactly what the pickup the man was towing with is, but it appears to be a full sized pickup if you look at it in relation to the wrecker that is getting ready to tow it. The trailer appears to be of the shorter variety as it seems to only have one air conditioner on top. The pickup doesn't appear to be too small for the job. Even the drivers age is not necessarily a factor. More often than not, it is driving faster than conditions allow. Whether wind could have been a factor in getting the trailer fishtailing or something else, very few can handle the resulting pull on the vehicle unless they slow down.
However, I am not completely opposed to more regular checking on each individuals abilities as they reach a certain age, perhaps not having a drivers license last as long before it has to be renewed. But I also think about how I would feel if they wanted to take my license away. My ability to drive and having a car has always meant freedom to me. Didn't matter if I actually went any place or not, as long as that car was sitting there, I knew I could. Weighing both sides is important, public safety and individual freedom. It's lucky this guy seems to have come out in decent condition and didn't hurt anyone else.

I was was travling home at the time of the accident and and it was just that an accident. I was one of the people who waited there for the EMT's. The truck was big enough to pull that little trailer. Yes, he was older but that hill has seen many accidents and they aren't all older people. The trailer just got away from him. He was coming down the hill, not speeding, the trailer started to fish tail and he lost control, the truck flip and was sliding down the hill.

Accident at 50 and 601 Rd

I cannot believe an 89 yr old was driving this large rig. My husband encountered this accident coming home from Linn and by what he could tell the vehicle pulling the trailer was too small for the job. I'm not for taking the drivers license, but I am for restricting WHAT, WHERE AND WHEN a person of this age can drive. It is common knowledge that age decreases strength, awareness, reaction time and many other attributes. Like it or not it happens.
