Bates' mother says she has not seen or heard from him since she dropped him off at a football game at Osage High School in Osage Beach Friday evening.
The Missouri Highway Patrol is reporting Bates sent a text message to his mother asking if he could stay the night at a friend's house-but when his mother contacted the friend the next day, the friend said he had not seen Bates since the football game and had no knowledge of a sleepover.
The Patrol says Bates is mentally handicapped and takes medication. He has not had his medication since Friday.
James Bates is six-feet two- inches tall, 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
He was last seen wearing gray sweatshirt with a zipper, blue jeans and black and white tennis shoes.
