JEFFERSON CITY -- Jefferson City Police have arrested and charged a St. Louis man for shooting a man he planned to rob.

Investigators said Patrick Harris, 37, was recently released from prison. Now, he has been charged with assault for shooting a man last night outside a Capitol Avenue law firm in Jefferson City.

Two men who work for law offices inside a stately building in the 600 block of Capitol Ave. were hosting an outdoor get together late Tuesday night but what started as a good time ended in bloodshed.

Five men were hanging out in carport alongside the building when Harris approached them, flashed a gun and ordered them inside.

Police say Harris then made the men lie down on the floor and began stealing their wallets, watches and cell phones. But Harris didn't get away easily. One of the victims, a 34 year old man, also had a gun, which he had a conceal and carry license for, and the two men started shooting at each other.

"We're not sure yet who fired the first shot, but they exchanged multiple shots,” said Capt. Michael Smith of the Jefferson City Police Department.

Harris dropped the stolen stuff and ran. Police spent the night searching the neighborhood for him but the wet weather made it hard.

"We attempted to pick up a blood trail from the building and because of the terrible weather last night; the rain and it was so dark, most of the evidence was lost,” said Smith.

At daybreak another blood trail led them to an upstairs apartment that Brenda Oakley was renting.

"The resident of this apartment had known he was in there and didn't tell us,” said Smith.

Police found Harris hiding in the laundry room with a bullet-wound on his left hand. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.

It turns out Harris had been staying with Oakley for several days. She's been charged with tampering with physical evidence and hindering prosecution.

Police said the 34-year-old shooting victim's wounds were not life-threatening. He underwent surgery and is recovering Wednesday night at University Hospital in Columbia.

Investigators hope to re-interview him Thursday about the incident.

Rights

I agree with another comment, maybe if thugs realize that their potential victims could also have a weapon, then maybe they'll think twice before commiting their crime. THIS is why I believe in our right to bear arms. Criminals will always be able to get guns and we have a right to protect ourselves. The victim's family is in my prayers, what a scary time for them. I heard that he might have limited mobility in his hands due to his injuries. The article says that some of the victims were at a law firm, hopefully the gun shot victim IS a lawyer and doesn't have a job that requires him to use his hands a lot...or else I fear for his family's well-being. I'm just so thankful he's alive!

MAD FAMILY MEMBER

FIRST OFF I WOULD LIKE TO SAY,THAT WHAT MY UNCLE DID IS NOT A GOOD THING.AND I DONT AGREE WITH WHAT HE DID,AND MY SYMPATHY GOES OUT TO THE PERSON THAT GOT WOUNDED.AND THE OTHER PEOPLE THAT MAY HAVE GOT HURT.BUT HES A PERSON AND NO ONE SHOULD JUDGE. THATS NOT FOR ANYONE TO JUDGE HIM AND HE DO HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS THAT LOVE HIM VERY MUCH.NOW IT WAS SAID WHAT HE DID A VERY BAD THING.BUT HAS IT BEEN SAID THAT THE COUNTY JAIL IS LETTIG HIM SIT THERE WOUNDED WITH HIS HAND HANGING OFF.WITH NO MEDICAL ATTENTION.WE ARE HIS FAMILY ,BUT THEY WONT LET HIM CALL HOME.TO LET S NOT THAT HE HAS BEEN SHOT IN THE HAND AND IT'S HANGING OFF.THATS NOT RIGHT LET HIM HAVE HIS DAY IN COURT AND GIVE HIM MEDICAL ATTENTION.

Looks as though the story was corrected after I made the comment (considering I copy and pasted the quote from the story).

No longer do you have to have a permit to aquire a handgun in MO. MO has NO registration of any firearms.

I was simply stating that this was not correct.

KEEP SHOOTING

ANSWER TO SONNY, KEEP SHOOTING. MORE PEOPLE NEED TO GET THEIR CONCEALED CARRY PERMITS AND START DEFENDING THEMSELVES, FAMILY AND PROPERTY. MAYBE THEN THE PUNKS THAT ARE COMMITTING THE CRIMES WOULD THINK TWICE BEFORE DOING SO, AND IF NOT AT LEAST THEY COULD CATCH A BULLET. I JUST WISH THE VICTIM COULD HAVE SHOT A LITTLE BETTER AND SAVED US SOME TAX DOLLARS ON A TRIAL AND INCARCERATION!!!!

Contrary to popular belief, there is no registration of firearms in gun shops or pawn shops. There is only an ATF Form 4473 background check run, which does NOT register any firearm to the person purchasing, it ONLY says whether or not the person interested in purchasing a firearm is allowed to or not by law. An ATF Form 4473 is NOT in any way considered registration. Missouri does NOT require any firearm to be registered to any individual whatsoever, some counties won't even allow it. As far as the state of Missouri seems to be concerned, if the federal government will allow a person to purchase a firearm, they may, providing they have passed the necessary background check(s). There are no longer permits issued by county required to purchase handguns through legal routes such as gun or pawn shops. Conceal and Carry permits allow those individuals who have passed all required classes and checks to carry on their person a concealed firearm, even then, there is no registration of any firearm required.

It doesn't even say Registered in this text

They said "which he had a conceal and carry license". Not a registered gun. Read the entire thing before you start bitching about the laws in Missouri. I'm not saying I don't care that they had guns but one man went through the conceal and carry class and apparently passed and the other was some loser who just bought a gun...probably off the streets because you actually DO have to register guns in pawn shops and gun shops.

Mo doesnt have a registration law? I guess not technically but you do have to get a permit which does log the serial number of the gun at purchase. And the wording of the reporter may have been used out of context. The victim probably has a conceal and carry permit which was more than likely what she was referring to.

"One of the victims, a 34 year old man, also had a registered gun on him, and the two men started shooting at each other."

Missouri does not have a gun registration so it would not have been "registered".
