HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) -- A Hannibal man has been convicted of murder in the beating death of another Hannibal man during a street confrontation.
Jurors in St. Charles County found 24-year-old David Ater guilty of second-degree murder and kidnapping Thursday, after the trial was held there on a change of venue from Marion County.
The victim, Rodney Wood, was driving past Ater and another man, 22-year-old Nathan Stice, on a motorized bike last year. The circumstances just prior to his death are unclear, but a fight began and Wood was beaten to death. Police said Ater barricaded himself and others inside a home after the attack while police searched the neighborhood.
Stice has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in the killing, and an additional eight years for violating his probation.
