The 84-year-old Columbia woman suffered from burns in last month's home explosion

COLUMBIA -- An 84-year-old Columbia woman has died of injuries suffered in a March 14 house explosion that killed her husband.

Boone County medical examiners said Merna Sneed died early Thursday at University Hospital's George Peak Burn Center. The retired University of Missouri home economics professor had been in critical condition with burns over more than 40 percent of her body.

The explosion also killed Sneed's husband, 87-year-old Carl Sneed. He was a retired mechanical engineering professor at Missouri.

Investigators found that natural gas caused the explosion, but the origin of the gas in the house and the ignition source that sparked the blast remain undetermined.
