The third oldest women’s college in the United States is celebrating its 175th birthday.

Columbia’s Stephens College first opened in 1833.

Hundreds of people were on campus this week for the kick-off of a year long celebration and birthday party.

Stephens College President Wendy Libby says her school gets better with age.

“We’ve done a lot on our physical plan,” said Libby. “We’ve increased the size of our faculty this year.  Our undergraduate student numbers are up 54 percent from fall of ‘03.  Our graduate continuing studies program is up almost 100 percent. That’s nearly double of where we were a few years ago.”

Stephens College officials have planned activities throughout the upcoming year in honor of the school’s 175th birthday.

The school’s largest annual fundraiser takes place on Feb.22.
