Jay Nixon’s gubernatorial campaign has paid the state $47,000 for the political use of his Attorney General's Office staff and his state vehicle.
A Nixon campaign spokesman says the payment was made Friday to cover expenses dating to November of 2004.
Nixon had defended the use of his state staff and car as necessary security measures while traveling on political trips.
He justified the practice by claiming he is always on duty as attorney general -- even when campaigning for governor.
But, in the face criticism for the practice, Nixon’s campaign announced two weeks ago it would reimburse the state.
From now on, Nixon’s campaign says it will lease a vehicle for him to use on political trips.
