JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- It's the fulfillment of any stockcar driver's dreams, a win in the sport's most prestigious event, the Daytona 500.

Jaime McMurray of Joplin, Mo. realized that dream a week ago Sunday.

McMurray drove a replica of his 850 horsepower stockcar into Jefferson City Thursday morning to be honored by lawmakers.

Gov. Jay Nixon proclaimed today as Jaime McMurray day in Missouri.

"Jamie McMurray's victory at Daytona not only brought him honor for his achievement, but also to this great state for his upbringing,” Nixon said.

At 33, this one-time go-cart champion has reached the top of his profession. And he's enjoying his new "favorite son" status.

"This is just one of the coolest things that ever happened to me, so thanks, guys,” McMurray said.

McMurray's primary sponsor is Springfield, Mo. based Bass Pro Shops. Bass pro-chief Johnny Morris said the show-me state is well connected to the number one Chevy Impala.

"Two of our tire changers are from right here in Missouri,” Morris said. “There's a lot of team spirit and it's just an honor to be here today.”

Inside the Capitol, there were autographs to be signed and photos to be taken. McMurray told lawmakers he was a lot more comfortable behind the wheel than behind the microphone. Even so, this occasion had special meaning for him.

"I've never been more proud to be born in the state of Missouri than I have been today,” McMurray said. “This has been...(applause)...yeah.”

McMurray finished 17th in last Sunday’s race at Fontana, Calif.

This weekend, the Sprint Cup series moves to Las Vegas.
