COLUMBIA, MO. -- Missouri Sen. Kit Bond toured the University of Missouri's Thompson Center for Autusm and Neurodevelopmental Disorders on Wednesday afternoon.
Last year, Bond secured $750,000 in federal funds to assist the center with numerous structural improvements and the purchase of enhanced technology used to treat and diagnose autism.
The federal money also helps Thompson Center faculty serve more Missouri children and families, while enhancing MU's national reputation for high quality research.
“We’re going to have an expanded ability with state of the art audio/visual equipment," Thompson Center Director of Academic Programs Janet Farmer said. "We use the equipment by first capturing the child’s behavior in fine detail. It allows us to improve diagnostic precision and treatment planning.”
MU Thompson Center served more than 1,700 individuals last year.
The Thompson Center is the largest facility in Missouri specializing in autism spectrum disorders.
