COLUMBIA -- Bird lovers with MU's Raptor Rehabilitation Program gathered Sunday for the release of a bald eagle back into the wild. He’s named L'aiglon...and his release today comes after months of healing after a farmer found him injured on his property.
Since his discoveries last fall...he's been treated at the MU vet school by the raptor rehabilitation project club. They said after receiving surgery on his wing, L’aiglon has been in a flight cage building up his muscle to go back to the wild. And Sunday three miles from Eagles Bluff, L'aiglon was released.
"All the hard work and all the spare time we devoted to this project is made worth it when you see a bird take out of a box like that; that was injured that wouldn't have made it without your help and then he just takes off and hopefully we will never see him again," says Erin West, project president
Even though the bald eagles number are soaring, Missouri still has it’s status as endangered. Missouri is one of the leading bald eagle states with more than two thousand of them occupying the state. And L'aiglon will just add to that healthy number.
