JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) -- Update: 12:58 p.m.

The attorney for a teenager accused of killing a 9-year-old Missouri girl says his client should be sent to a psychiatric hospital.

A judge had not approved the move as of noon Friday, though a draft order had been submitted by the public defender Thursday as part of the case file.

Fifteen-year-old Alyssa Bustamante has been held at the Morgan County jail after being indicted Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 21 death of Elizabeth Olten.

Authorities say Bustamante strangled, stabbed and cut the throat of Elizabeth because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill. They say Bustamante led them to Elizabeth's body two days later in a wooded area near their homes in St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City.

A teenager accused of killing a 9-year-old Missouri girl has been sent to a mental hospital after her attorney said she showed signs of severe depression and anxiety.

A Cole County judge ordered 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante to be taken to the Fulton State Hospital for up to 96 hours. The teenager had been held at the Morgan County jail since being indicted Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Authorities say Bustamante strangled, stabbed and cut the throat of Elizabeth Olten on Oct. 21 because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill. They say Bustamante led them to Elizabeth's body two days later in a wooded area near their homes in St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City.

Don't know how to feel

Posted by Don,t know how to feel, jc - Monday, November 23, 2009 at 1:15 p.m.

I am so sad about this terrible crime that I don't know how to put my feelings into proper order. I am a mother of two and can't imagine not seeing any signs that might have stopped this horrible event. The definition of "animal" in the dictionary is,"a brutish or inhuman person." It's easy to see why people would classify Alyssa as an animal. It is also easy to understand the shock and outrage our community feels. It is hard to give sympathy to ANY killer when the sympathy you feel for the victim and her family outweighs a killer of ANY age who said she did it to "see how it feels" to kill someone. My heart goes out to the Olten family AND Alyssas family. I can't seem to find sympathy for Alyssa yet and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. The fact that the killer ,in this case, was only 15 just adds to my confusion.

why waste time

this 15 y/o is nothing more than a sociopath, she feels nothing and only reacts to her surroundings by what she sees others do. In order to get first degree murder, the person must have premeditated the murder. You are not insane or having a heat of the moment with premeditated murder. You know what you are doing. You can not say " I wanted to know what it feels like" and think she is insane, well insane to be in a mental instut.Again she knew what she was doing and she should get get everything the law can give her. She can be evaluated that won't change that she is a sociopath and would do it again if given another chance. She deserves life in prison without parole, that is not even harsh enough.

NO sympathy from me!

I am going to sound like one cruel mean and evil b!tch, but I don't care what her mental state is was or whatever. In hopes that she gets LIFE! Personaly I don't think she DESERVES any type of meds. Who cares what her mental state is while she is locked up, WE the people of this state are providing her with three hots and a cot that she will be given for the rest of her life. Why spend the money on meds for a person who will never be let back out on the streets again.

There are MILLIONS of people that are living on the streets and can not afford the medication that they NEED for mental illness, heart issues, or CANCER these people have not commited a crime they are simply living this way because they put their health before their home. Yet "we" are willing to "cure" a 15 year old girl who KILLED an innocent little 9 year old SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO KNOW WHAT IT FELT LIKE?

I THINK NOT!

Don't fell sorry for her

My definition of an animal is an entity that reacts on instinctive impulses without the capability to reason... sounds right to me!

What She is really After

Posted by Mental Health Worker, Fulton - Friday, November 20, 2009 at 2:44 p.m.

The Department of Mental Health will file for a longer stay so they can evaluate her longer. I see this happen all the time. It never stays at 96 hours. She will be at the hospital for months if not a year or two or longer until the hospital and her “private” doctors decide she is “competent” to stand trial. If she is never found to be “competent” then the Judge will say she is NGRI (Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity). This is the ultimate goal her attorney is after. If she gets her NGRI the Judge will commit her to the care of the hospital until a panel of doctors determines she is “cured” or can live in the community, most likely supervised. This process can be as little as 6 years or as much as 25 or longer if need be. But in the eyes of her attorney this is better than the death penalty or life behind bars! And most persons prefer the stay at the “Hospital” instead of “Prison” because they are not treated like “Prisoners” but rather “Patients”. And don’t even get me started on that! News 8 just did a story on employee injuries at the hospital….

People are Horrible

This girl is not "mental or depressed all of a sudden." She has had a history of this. No one is trying to get her off by putting her in a mental hospital. All they are doing is trying to get her the help she needs. Think about this, wouldn't you become mental, depressed, suicidal, whatever if you had killed a nine year old little girl and have had time to sit and think about nothing but that? Maybe, just maybe, she is showing signs of a little remorse for what she has done. Does this mean she should not pay for her crime, absolutely 100% not. And for those people that have called her an animal. . . really? Does she walk on all fours, swim in the water, peck around in a barnyard, no she doesn't. This is a human being. It's attitudes like those in this city that have caused our children to turn out the way they have these days. Lock them up, throw them away, and forget about them instead of help them. Glad the people that think this way weren't my parents.

Funny...

....how now that she has a new lawyer, as of what TODAY?.....that she is immediately sent to Fulton State by him?????? They couldn't have a more cut & dry GUILTY case....so ANY lawyer she gets is going to grasp at straws like this....what a waste of taxpayers dollars!

Too bad...

I don't feel for this young woman one bit. She wanted to know what it felt like to kill another? Now she depressed? You've got to be kidding me! She'll know real soon what justice feels like when they throw the book at her. Lock her away for life, That'll make me sleep at night.

What a joke. Sent her to the mental hosptial because she is depressed. If she wanted to kill herself why didnt she? Why did she kill Elizabeth?? Half of America is diagonsed as Depressed. Should you send half of America to the mental hospital? She cant stand being locked up and cant run wild as a teenager. That is what her problem is. I dont think she cared one bit about taking a life. Now that she has to face the consequences she is mental all of a sudden or depressed. What ever. Put her back in jail like all the other killers are. Show her no mercy because what she did was merciless!!!!!!!!!!

if she think this is going to help her get off she must be been hit by the wrong door,if she think by going in a mental hospital it is going to help get her off she full of it,if Jan king thinks by sending her there will help her case he got it all wrong.with 96 hours what do they think that will help only help she needs is to be lock up forever.what a big joke they think they are playing with make's me sick.
