JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri has added four new members to exclusive Academy of Squires.

New academy members added Thursday are civil rights leader Frankie Freeman, theme park owner Peter Herschend, university president Jack Magruder and St. Louis Cardinals player Mike Shannon.

The Academy of Squires was created in 1960, and it honors 100 living Missourians who have achieved greatness. New members are elected by the existing squires.

Freeman is an attorney and worked to desegregate public housing in St. Louis. She was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame in 2007.

Herschend's company owns Silver Dollar City in Branson.

Magruder was the president of Truman State University for nine years. Shannon has been a Cardinals broadcaster since 1972.
