OSAGE COUNTY -- The Highway Patrol is investigating after an Osage County Sheriff's Deputy was driving drunk and crashed his patrol car.
Osage County Sheriff's Department officials say Dana Dawson, a four year veteran of the department, was driving drunk Friday night on the job and got into an accident in his patrol car.
The accident happened around 10 p.m. Friday on Highway 89 near Linn.
Dawson told the highway patrolman he had swerved to miss a deer in the road and went down an embankment and crashed.
He was arrested for DWI and taken to the Osage County jail. He was promptly fired by the sheriff and his gun and county property were taken away. He was held for 12 hours and released.
Dawson had been on duty for about five hours when the accident happened.
Officials would not speculate on how Dawson became impaired.
Dawson did not have any injuries from the accident.
Sheriff’s department officials say Dawson had a clean record before this incident. They also say they are grateful no one was injured.
