FORT LEONARD WOOD -- The mood is described as somber at mid-Missouri's Fort Leonard Wood today, as soldiers and military families react to the shooting rampage at a military base in Texas that left 12 dead and dozens injured.
People on the Missouri base said yesterday was tense as many feared Fort Leonard Wood could be targeted as well.
Once it became clear the shooting was isolated to Texas, thoughts turned to relatives and acquaintances stationed at fort hood.
"I was, wow. I was stationed there for awhile on Fort Hood. It's a pretty big installation. I was blown away by it," Cornelius Lunsford said.
"I teach in a public school system here in Missouri and when I heard that this had happened around 1:30 p.m., I'm thinking, oh my goodness, parents are not getting access to their children,” Teacher Cathy Epperson said. “The children are probably wondering what's happening."
Base officials said the worries extend to civilians in the neighboring town of St. Robert.
The security threat level at Fort Leonard Wood was not elevated following the shooting in Texas.
Counselors are available to soldiers at the base
