OWENSVILLE -- Police have not file charges at this time in the case of an accidental shooting in Gasconade County that killed a three year old girl.

The Gasconade County Sheriff said he will submit his report to the prosecutor Thursday.

Investigators said the suspect was target practicing in Owensville, aiming for the paper plate on a tree. The stray bullet hit Allison Schneider.

Sheriff Esphorst said while target shooting is not illegal, the man was acting irresponsibly.

"Its obviously pretty neglectful, you know, to be firing on a straight line like that, 300 and something yards away without any backdrop or berm or protection or a bank to fire into or anything like that,” Esphorst said.

The stray bullet traveled over 350 yards past the target and across this field, missing her mother and her friends, but hitting Allison in the left temple.

Bullet fragments from the girl's fatal wound will be tested against the man's ammunition.

It will be up to the prosecutor to decide if criminal charges will be filed.
