COLUMBIA -- A Hallsville man accused of murdering his former brother-in-law testified in his own defense during day two of his trial.
Authorities say Billy Clinch shot and killed Jeremy Bohannon of Rocheport at a Columbia McDonald’s Restaurant two years ago.
Prosecutors rested their case against Clinch on Tuesday afternoon.
Clinch then took the stand for nearly two hours and answered questions from his public defender. He told a Lafayette County jury that he was gay and that he never had sex with his sister Mandy.
Prosecutors say Clinch had an incestuous affair with his sister who was also Bohannon's wife. They say Clinch murdered Bohannon out of jealousy.
Clinch says he killed Bohannon because he feared his alleged victim would have murdered his sister Mandy and her three children. He told jurors a story of how Bohannon beat his infant son Joey in a fit of rage.
“He took the baby into the back bedroom," said Clinch. "Then all of a sudden, I could hear slapping sounds like this. It was louder than that. I want to say it lasted probably five minutes.”
Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight rested his case after showing the jury a surveillance video of the murder in the McDonald's parking lot.
Knight gets his chance to cross-examine clinch after the defense finishing its questioning on Wednesday morning.
Clinch faces a charge of first-degree murder.
