Flags fly at half staff for fallen Marine

U.S. and Missouri flags will be flown at half staff on Sunday, Aug. 16, in honor of a fallen Marine.

Lance Corporal Patrick W. Schimmel, 21, of Winfield, Mo. died while serving in the Helmand province of Afghanistan on Aug. 9.

Flags will also fly at half staff from Aug. 17 to Aug. 22 on all state buildings in Lincoln County.

Schimmel was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, U.S. Marie Corps Base in Came Lejeune, North Carolina. His awards and decorations included the Meritorious Mast, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Lance Corporal Schimmel also was awarded the Purple Heart after his death.

Schimmel joined the military after high school in 2006.
