TIPTON -- The switch to digital television happened five days ago, but people in one community are still having problems getting their local channels.

The FCC mandated local broadcasters to make the switch to digital, and in the case of pay television, cable and satellite companies were expected to make the change as well.

Tipton resident, Laura Brauer, 91, is a KRCG viewer and likes to watch the KRCG News at Noon, but could not Tuesday, and has not been able to since the switch to digital last Friday.

"It's very quiet here,” said Brauer. “I like to have the noise as well as getting the news. I miss getting the news everyday."

Brauer is without KRCG because her cable company, Almega Cable, was not ready for the conversion-which means all Almega Cable customers in Tipton, Versailles, and California are without a signal for all local channels. All they see on KRCG is the DTV conversion special, looping in English, then Spanish.

It has not just meant a loss of television programs or news for Brauer and other Tipton cable customers. They have received zero local weather coverage as severe weather as swept through the Heart of Missouri.

After several calls, KRCG finally got Almega Cable officials on the phone.

"They are not working now because it’s already out,” said an Almega spokesperson. “Because analog is no more.  So, no customers, not even a single customer, will be able to get the channels."

KRCG responded "Yes, I'm aware that they can't get the channels. What I'm asking is how were you all not ready with digital channels for them when you knew the switch to digital was coming for months?"

“We didn't have a local person in Tipton,” said Almega. “The person who was working down there unfortunately left the company."

Almega officials say that technician left without notice last week. They hired a replacement in the last few days who is now hooking up the digital converters.

Almega tells KRCG all Tipton residents will have their local channels by today.

Almega Cable officials say all customers who have been without their local channels will get a credit on their account.

We have Almega down here too--same problems.

I have been fighting with Almega for the past 5 months, channels are always going out, and they always tell me they "are working on the problem". I live in Warsaw--Truman Lake area. We have no other cable choices here. They are a lousy cable company. I have reported them to the FCC and the Mo Attorney General. I would encourage EVERYONE to do the same--squeaky wheel gets the grease. I am about ready to cancel Almega and have no TV down here at all. Besides, Satellite is cheaper! Before Friday I got 7 & 8 out of Columbia--but no more! I have about had it with them!
