JEFFERSON CITY --

Updated 6:08 p.m.

A Johnson Controls corporate spokeswoman has confirmed what KRCG viewers have been telling us throughout the day on Wednesday: Its facility in Jefferson City will close by the end of the year because of a continued slump in automobile sales.

The mid-Missouri plant manufactures foam used in vehicle seats. The company said the work done in Jefferson City will move to other Johnson Controls facilities around the United States. Earlier this month, the company reported it would incur "restructuring charges" as it moved to consolidate operations.

There is no word yet on an exact date the Jefferson City location would close, or what kind of severance packages the 120 employees impacted could receive.

Original Story

KRCG's newsroom began receiving tips Wednesday morning from viewers that Jefferson City's Johnson Controls company, at 2730 W. Main Street, is about to make massive layoffs.

Viewers said the company may be closed by the end of the year, if not sooner. In a news release on the company's national Web site they said, "The company's fourth quarter ends Sept. 3, 2008. Johnson Controls will report earnings on Oct. 23, 2008." The company is calling the changes a "restructuring charge."

The news release also stated that, "The actions target reductions in the company's cost base by decreasing excess manufacturing capacity due to lower industry production and the continued movement of vehicle production to low cost countries."

Although several viewers have told KRCG the Jefferson City location is being closed, the news release does not mention any domestic companies being shut down

No one at Johnson Controls have returned KRCG's phone calls.

Officials at Jefferson City's Chamber of Commerce would not comment either. Over the phone, Randy Allen, the Chamber's executive director, said they have not received the official word from Johnson Controls about the layoffs but are keeping on the company to get an answer.

No employees would comment either.

Johnson Controls News Release

Johnson Controls Announces 2008 Fourth-Quarter Restructuring Charge

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- To better align its resources with its growth strategies while reducing the cost structure of its global operations, Johnson Controls, Inc. today announced it plans to initiate restructuring activities which will result in an estimated pre-tax charge of $450 to $500 million in its 2008 fourth quarter.

The restructuring charge relates to cost reduction initiatives in its automotive experience, building efficiency and power solutions businesses and includes workforce reductions and plant consolidations. The company expects to substantially complete the initiatives by early 2010.

The automotive-related restructuring is in response to the fundamentals of the European and North American automotive markets. The actions target reductions in the company's cost base by decreasing excess manufacturing capacity due to lower industry production and the continued movement of vehicle production to low-cost countries, especially in Europe. The restructuring actions in Building Efficiency are primarily in Europe where the company is centralizing certain functions and rebalancing its resources to target the geographic markets with the greatest potential growth. Power Solutions actions are focused on optimizing its regional manufacturing capacity.

Johnson Controls said it expects the restructuring plan will improve its long-term growth prospects in its highly competitive global markets.

The company's fourth quarter ends on September 30, 2008. Johnson Controls will report earnings on October 23, 2008.

The company will hold an analyst conference call to discuss the restructuring plan on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. Eastern time. A live webcast of the call, as well as a recorded archive, can be accessed at http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/.
