AUXVASSE --

Editor's Note: This story contains sensitive language.

Marlene Ballard is the fiancee of David Corn - the man accused of murdering his wife, "Jane Doe," and burying her body in a shallow grave last month.

"Really, I'm glad the bitch is gone," said Ballard outside of their mobile home. "Now I can say it since the officer isn't here. I'm sorry to say it. I'm glad the bitch is gone. But now David's gone."

Investigators identified the body Wednesday as Melissa Corn, 35, of Auxvasse.

Ballard spoke candidly about the bizarre triangle she was involved in, which had her living with David Corn even before his wife, Melissa, turned up dead.

The three shared a trailer house in Auxvasse. And while police worked to figure out what exactly happened to the woman known then only as Jane Doe, Ballard said she already knew Melissa Corn was dead, a month before her body was found.

"Two days afterwards, we [David Corn and Ballard] went down to the river," she said. "I went where we used to camp at and stood there for awhile and then went back to the vehicle. And he walked in the woods. And I asked him, 'What is he doing out in the woods?' He told me not to worry about it. So then I went out there and that's when I saw her, her body."

Ballard said she didn't tell police because she didn't want her fiance to get into trouble. Two days earlier, sometime in March, she, David, and Melissa got into a heated argument at the house. David left with Melissa but the two didn't return home together.

What is truly chilling though is the story, the lie, they told Melissa's family. They said Melissa had all of a sudden "moved out" and that they "took her to Flying J," a truck stop near St. Louis.

Ballard freely admitted she didn't like Melissa, that she and David wanted her out of the house and out of their lives.

During a 12 minute interview, in which she hardly ever made eye contact, she expressed jealousy, anger and sadness. She often contradicted herself when asked whether she believed her fiance was capable of murdering his wife.

"I don't think he done it," said Ballard. "But the officer said he did so I don't think he did it."

But five minutes later she changed her story, saying, "I believe he did it but not on [purpose]. " Ballard said she believes Corn did in fact kill his wife, but that it was an accident.

"I don't think he meant to," she said.

Ballard said she played no role in the murder and that she still loves and stands by her fiance. But in the end she revealed little concern for Melissa Corn. In fact, there was outright contempt.

"If I had a chance I would have done it," she said. "And then I would've been in David's place."

In response to our interview with Ballard, Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane said her sentiments - about Melissa being gone - was not something she had told investigators. He didn't confirm any other details, except to say that investigators had already interviewed her.

To "Sick of the Complaining"

Posted by soncerea garrison, jefferson city - Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 11:55 p.m.

It should be a sense of moral obligation to report a dead body. If you can come across one and not tell the authorities, then you expect the bashing. Would you feel different if it would have been your sister, mother or daughter she had found? Hmmm..

Sick of the Complaining

Posted by Bob Jones, Fulton - Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 9:13 a.m.

To those of you who seem to know the law so well, by all means, go try to do the deuputies job for a day. You all seem to think you know it all so why are you the one's sitting back on your computers doing nothing more than complaining about a topic you know nothing about? Maybe you should spend some of the time you spend criticizing others on something more beneficial.... like learning about the law. Read a book. You are talking down on the cops and on the residence of Auxvasse, when you are not any better than any of them. You sit here and type on your fancy computers and downgrade our local law enforcement. Get off your butt and do something if you think you can do it better. Go and do their jobs, then you tell me what you think. If you knew absolutely ANYTHING about the law, you would know that they can not arrest someone for not reporting a dead body. You are not lawfully required to report finding a body unless you are blood related to the deceased. And the only way a person can be arrested for withholding information is if they were ASKED and then withheld it. You call Auxvasse residents "Stupid" and say that the Sheriff's Department isn't doing their job and are "Lazy". In all reality, you are ignorant of the law and are the lazy one for not learning about it before you start bashing people for doing something that they are not lawfully able to do. Get your facts right people. Why don't you all be grateful that the actual murderer was caught.... that the crime is solved... instead of pessimistically downgrading someone because your life sucks and you have nothing better to do than to bitch and moan. GET A LIFE!!!

She did it too!

Focus

Posted by d r, missouri - Friday, May 23, 2008 at 9:54 a.m.

I hope focusing on Ms. Ballard's statements will bring about some change regarding statutes. There should be more focus on the fact that the wheelchair dealer stepped up and acted like a responsible citizen, and reported something that he believed needed to be reported and could be helpful to law enforcement. It was. A big thank you to him. Maybe if there was more focus on the people who do the right things, the right things would be done more often. Thanks again wheelchair dealer.

'Jane Doe's sister-n-law's two cents.....

Posted by Karrie Jordan, Wentzville, MO - Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 7:59 p.m.

I am Missy's (Melissa's) sister-n-law. I(& our family) am just as appauled about this as everyone - it just seems surreal.....absolutely unbelievable. For those who didn't know Missy, she had cerebral palsy - definately not capable of defending herself such as you or I. Murder is a horrifying evil act against another human, but when it involves the murder of a child, an elder, or like in this case, someone who is crippled, it proves to be even more intensly cold-hearted.
We know where Missy's soul is and she will rest in peace. The demons responsible for choosing her life to be over will burn in hell!!!!!

It's been comforting reading how many of you are outraged and sympathetic over this. Jason & his Family thank you all for your support! Bless you!!!!

Accessory to the Fact

Posted by D B, Jefferson City, Mo. 65109 - Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 4:07 p.m.

My heart goes out to this family, to lose a loved one in such a manor is just horrible. I know the sheriff is doing his job, but on the other hand I also think the girlfriend knows alot more than she has admitted. She knew about the death, if not involved why would she not talk out of fear for herself. I would not doubt she didn't help. She knew and never told and I do believe she had a part in it. She did not just follow him that day and happen on to her dead body, come on I know the sheriff department has to be smarter than that. PLEAZZZZZZZ. Take a better look into this, she is deffinately guilty!!!! She is as guilty as that horrible man. Shame, Shame, on all of you!!!

JK from JC

Posted by Melissa Gilman, Auxvasse, Mo - Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 4:04 p.m.

JK-
We’re the terrible ones?
Someone has died & all you’re worried about it criticizing the town she is from. I don’t know what you have against Auxvasse, but you can get over it & yourself. Look at the statistics, there are more deaths in JC in a yr than in Auxvasse. There are more shootings, vandalism, robberies, etc…. get my point! You can keep your CITY & I will keep my little “Po Dunk” Town that I have lived in my entire life. We raise Angus cattle, we provide food, and what do you do? Sit in side & play video games? The small towns provide the crops & livestock that feed the world. I like how you use your initials, which is the same as Ms. Ballard not being able to look someone in the eyes. If I am going to say something, I mean what I say & stand behind it not hide from the world!
As far as Ms. Ballard, sounds like she had something to do with the murder. Even if she didn’t, she was definitely an accessory after the fact & obviously has mental issues. She needs to at the least be in a mental home.
My Condolences to Melissa’s Family!

My condolences....

to Jason and the rest of the family. The Sheriff Department is doing their job, but it is law that they have to follow so those who disagree with the girlfriend not being arrested (as I do) you can not blame the Sheriff Department/Officers they are only doing what they can: enforcing the law.

Ok

Posted by J R, Sedalia - Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 12:56 p.m.

So, maybe Ms Ballard does have a lower IQ, but I don't think that should matter, she has info on the murder and she seems to know that murder is wrong. She should have went forward, she doesn't seem to be in fear of her life. I think she looks and acts like she has been spun out.

Ballard's an O.J.

She'll be free for as long as she lives, even though she needs help, bad. Go politics, legislation, and may corruption rule the world! What can we do about it?

Jason,
Please know I am dreadfully sorry for what you are going through. The grief of your loss mixed with the relief that Jane is now been identified is bittersweet for myself. You are right D. Crane was instrumental in giving Jane her rightful name and has made a arrest. The P.A. would be the one to direct the comments about additional charges being filed. I would like to know more about Melissa as a person please feel free to contact me.

JANE DOE MY SISTER

If Ballard hade any thing to do with the death of my sister it will come out in court so please stop calling out Cranes name he is doing all he can do thanks

My comment

Posted by JC Resident, JC, MO - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 9:20 p.m.

Just because she is low functioning doesn't mean she doesn't know what is going on. It was the media questioning her about her knowledge of the incident. They're not required to inform her of her right to counsel. They're just looking for her comments. She was smart enough not to say anything to law enforcement even though she wasn't smart enough to be quiet to the media. I'm sure she is low functioning, but she knows that she shouldn't give up the goods to the cops according to her comments. I'm not convinced she isn't an accessory after the fact.

Are you serious? Ballard knew of Melissa's death a month before she was found and the county decides not to include Ballard with any crime? She covered this up by keeping her mouth shut, like assessory after the fact. Has the county become that lazy that they really don't want to bother? Get real!

JK, JC It's spelled Auxvasse ! What are you on?

Posted by Auxvasse Resident, somewhere in Auxvasse - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 8:32 p.m.

What has happened in Auxvasse is horrible. I wonder if we had regular police coverage here( we are not told when police is on duty) if it would have made a real difference. I have lived here for year's and we have never had much police support. We depend on off duty officer's from Fulton to protect us. My question is why don't we see them more. By the way JK of JC if you can't spell it I wonder what your on. I want nothing more than see Auxvasse be a great place to live. Lately we have made the news because apparently our Mayor and City Council have nothing better than their own agenda's to follow. Think not? Come to our City Council meeting's, you would be surprised to see who's there!

Come on People

OK the news did nothing wrong. If anything the help her prove not only is she guilty but an insane plea. As for the cops in this town dont expect any of them to do anything until there told and then they let the insane poeple walk the streets. They really need to do there job on this one cause that is just cold hearted for someone to say about the dead mental or not you dont do that. My prayer are for Melissa family may god be with you all through this hard time.

Too Much Information!

Posted by Anonna Muss, St. Martins - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 3:47 p.m.

So, are you guys going to have to submit this as part of evidence or what? This is a little crazy! I mean, it's one thing to tell the truth, but the whole truth on camera is a little much! Obviously the lady's not right upstairs but she still seems a bit reliable on the whole story and I think with further interviewing you would find out more than you need to know, but then it would seem as if you're taking advantage of the lady. Just want to know how much more this footage can blow things out of proportion...

The Fiance

Posted by Bonnie Smith, Eugene - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 3:31 p.m.

The "Fiance" is just as guilty, I'd say, just by watching her this morning on the news and now reading this. Investagators had better check her alliby. First she did not think he killed her then she did. She seen the body when he put her in the woods? Would this not make her an accomplice. I don't know but something smells fishy. Pardon the pun.

Wow, even more proof as the comments roll in from Auxvasse that people there need to be in the Dulle-Hamilton Towers. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the whole town was in on it! This lady does need to be looked at more closely, and to all out there in Ox Vassy, umm, I can't think of anything as stupid as you. Thanks!

I may be out on a limb here, but this person who refers to him/herself as three question marks has got to be the same person commenting on the News Tribune. Just a hunch but it all sounds the same. My question to you... what point are you making, or attempting to make. You say the same thing in both posts... NOTHING. The public isn't assuming anything. That woman, or lack there of didn't have words put into her mouth. She spouted them out on her own!

Get a clue

??,? Get a clue! Ballard openly admitted she knew about the murder before Melissa's body was found! THERE IS NO ASSUMPTION!! I hope the sheriff's department does their job in arresting this women and throwing her in jail with the "dirt" fiancee. Death penalty for him. Send Ballard to the jungle-she won't last long. My sympathy to Melissa and her family.

Don't judge a book by it's cover...

Posted by R M, Fulton - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 1:52 p.m.

Unless you personally know Ms Ballard, don't be so quick to make judgements based on the media. The media took advantage of a very low functioning individual when they interviewed her. Shame on them. She is not intelligent enough to know she needed to have representation, nor the possibility the trouble she may be in. Obviously her thought process is out of order. I believe we all know of individuals like her who simply can not help themselves, let alone do an interview.

WHERE'S CHUCK?

Posted by Mokane Resident, Mokane - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 1:46 p.m.

Where’s Marlene’s husband or ex?? Chuck?? Anyone seen him lately ?? I really want to set some things clear with all of you watchers and readers of this article. It is really hard to put into words but -- you are not dealing with a person of average intelligent. Marlene is not some drugged out – burn out. She has a VERY low IQ and has NEVER made eye contact with people. She doesn’t understand that she shouldn’t be speaking to the media and that she should be cooperating with law enforcement - but boy the media runs wild with it. She probably has no idea of what is going on around her. I am sure Dennis Crane has no idea what to do with her. I think it is pretty safe to say, as a witness, accessory or whatever legal term will be put on it, Marlene will too see her day in court.

Arm Chair Quarterbacking

Posted by ? ?, ? - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 1:42 p.m.

It strikes me as funny to come into and read any forum pertaining to crime. There are so many people that are quick to judge and the closest they have ever come to being involved in law enforcement is to watch CSI or such.

Do everybody in the judical system a favor and stop watching CSI. Instead start watching the weather channel and after an episode or two you can think you are an expert on the weather and arm chair quarterback the weather people.

If you don't know then you are assuming and everybody knows what happens when you assume.

I do believe that Ms. ballard had something to do with the murder of Mrs. Corns, and she should be punished just as Mr. Corns. I also believe that people need to not shot down our Sheriffs Dept. They may have her in custody, Just because it showed on the 10:00pm news doesn't Mean she was free at 10:00pm.
Relax and let the men do there job. Justice was found for my family when we were in crisis and i belive the same for her family. May she rest in peace.

Shocked and Disgusted

Can we all say at the same time..."PWT"
We shall see if Callaway County's Finest can do some real police work. She most likely has blood on her hands as well. I doubt very seriously she just "saw" the body...if anyone heard this interview of her today, you can hear in her voice through her horrible words that she most likely was in on the physical killing herself. Let her fry, and if law enforcement wont do it, then the community needs to step in and take care of it.

Ms. Ballard's comments

Posted by Patricia Hooper, Columbia - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 12:11 p.m.

OMG!!! Just because you do not like someone, that gives Ms Ballard the right to say these things about Melissa Corn? Just because you do not like somebody for some bizarre reason gives you the damn right to take a life that cannot be brought back? You both should get the lethal injection for this. You LIED! You infact admitted that she was dead before they found her body? What gives you the right???? I do not feel a damn bit sorry for Ms Ballard or Mr Corn, they should get the maximum sentence allowable for this. How heinous!!! DISGUSTING!!! They should allow these to be stoned to death in my opinion. There is nothing worth taking the life of another human being.

She helped cover up a murder so why is this woman not sitting in a jail cell next to her boyfriend? I am shocked and this is appalling. Will there be another arrest in this case anytime soon already?!!!! Wow, not too bright is she? Here is a public confession law enforcement, now the public expects some action on this confession.

IF YOU READ EVEN A LITTLE OF WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY YOU CAN TELL SHE HAD SOMETING TO DO WITH IT. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AN INVESTIGATOR TO SEE THIS. SHE PRETTY MUCH ADMITS IT WHEN SHE SAYS THAT SHE KNEW A MONTH BEFORE THE BODY WAS FOUND THAT SHE HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. AND THE TRIP TO THE RIVER? SHE PROBABLY KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING IN THE WOODS. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER CASE OF CALLAWAY SHERRIF'S DEPARTMENT GETTING A QUICK ANSWER AND NOT DOING THE REST OF THEIR JOB SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO ALOT OF PAPER WORK. WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST TIME THEY DID IT. I KNOW THAT FOR A FACT. IF THEY DID THEIR JOB RIGHT, SHE WOULD BE IN JAIL RIGHT ALONG WITH HER FIANCE.
