What is it: |
|
| |
Cash for Clunkers is a government program that allows car owners to trade in old cars for up to $4,500 to apply towards a new car.
Cars must fit following criteria:
- must be 25 years old or newer
- combined fuel economy must be 18 miles per gallon or lower
Note: For some cars, trading it in for another car could be a better value than the cash for clunkers program.

Going to the car dealers: |
|
| |
Car owners can take their "clunker" to car dealers to get a cash voucher for their car.
However, recent cash flow problems are making car dealers wary of the program. A few local dealers are putting the brakes on the program because the government has not been reimbursing them for the vouchers they handed out.
The federal government has reassured car dealers across the country that they have the money to pay back dealerships and should continue the program.
