JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Without question, it's getting colder outside, so you and your family may decide to spark up your home's chimney to save on heating costs.
If you are one of those people, you may want to consider a few things before doing so.
A recent chimney flue fire in Jefferson City has the Jefferson City Fire Department out reminding people to do a few things before they enjoy that open fire.
"Get that chimney cleaned every year before you burn,” says Captain Tim Young of the Jefferson City Fire Department. “And make sure that the wood you're burning is not green, that it has dried out over a season, maybe over a year or so. That's going to reduce the moisture level that's in that wood. That's what causes that deposit"
F
ire officials say the creosote deposits are the main culprits of flue fires, so they recommend that people get their chimney cleaned out mid-winter as well.
