COLUMBIA -- A fire Thursday night caused significant damage to downtown Columbia law firm.

The Columbia Fire Department was called to the Trapp Law Firm at 609 East Walnut Street just before 8 p.m.

An assistant prosecutor who was at the courthouse noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the building and called 911.

Fire crews arrived on the scene minutes later and reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the building. They were able to locate the fire in the attic of the building and extinguish the flames before the fire spread to surrounding buildings.

Investigators say the cause of the fire was electrical. The exact circuit that failed in the ceiling couldn't be determined, because of the number of circuits running through the area and the number of breakers that were tripped.

Damage is estimated at $100,000. No one was injured.
