(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Anti-abortion activists marked the 40th anniversary of that landmark Supreme Court case granting abortion rights in a march at the Missouri Capitol.

Hundreds of people gathered Saturday at the Governor's Mansion for the Midwest March for Life. Led by a large wooden cross, protesters solemnly walked to the rotunda of the Statehouse, where they gathered for prayer and speeches.

David Bereit, the national director of the 40 Days for Life campaign, was the event's keynote speaker.

The Missouri chapter of 40 Days for Life sponsored the event and will hold prayer vigils outside Planned Parenthood locations in Columbia and St. Louis starting Feb. 13.

An estimated 55 million abortions have been performed since the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roe v. Wade in January 1973.
