JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- The weather didn't stop this morning's Governor's Prayer Breakfast in Jefferson City.

The breakfast featured St. Louis cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright as the keynote speaker.

Wainwright recently finished third in the National League CY Young award balloting.

He has been a starting pitcher for the cardinals for the past three seasons.

The prayer breakfast has been a Capitol City tradition for a half century.

"For more than 50 years the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast has brought together a diverse group of Missourians with one common purpose,” Gov. Jay Nixon said. “To ask for God's guidance and help in doing what is best for the people of this great state. In the coming months we will undoubtedly disagree at times about how this exactly should be done, but we should act together in a spirit of fellowship."

The breakfast is held on the second day of the legislative session and attracts lawmakers, public officials and other leaders.

Proceeds go to the governor's student leadership forum on faith and values.
