The Hot Dippity Dog swim event was just last weekend in Jefferson City, and I'm willing to bet if you took your pet, you guys had a great time! Unfortunately, Milo did not... and I think he was one of about 3 dogs who was not very happy about the experience.
We started off slow by going into the very shallow kiddie splash area with the fountains. We thought if we could slowly walk into the water he would be fine. Well, that was sort of the case until one little kid, bad timing, and a bad spot.
At first Milo was scared, but as long as he could put his paws on Jason's shoulder and cling to his side (just like little kids do when they're being shy or timid), he was alright. Then Jason let me hold him in the water. I found a nice quiet spot in the shallow kiddie pool; Milo was scared, but not freaking out... yet.
Just as I thought we were making some progress this little kid turned the wheel that changed how the water came out of the fountains... and it splashed right on top of us! The non-parent, little-patience-for-little-kids side of me could have screamed at that little monster!
Well it was mostly down hill from there. We decided to take Milo into the big pool and try to get him to swim. Oh he swam... but only after we practically dragged him into the water and only because he wanted to paddle his tail-end to the other side of the pool as fast as he could so he could get out again.
While Jason held Milo in the comfort of his arms, I remember looking at the poor dog's face... you could absolutely see terror in his eyes. I felt so bad for him! But he's a beagle/border collie dang it! He's suppose to love the water... right?
On his very last lap across the pool he did jump in on his own. Yay, progress! I got video of the miraculous event. You can watch it below...
Even though Milo was being quite the handful to deal with, we still had a lot of fun, and I plan on taking him back next year. Maybe it just takes time for him to realize he likes the water?
As it turns out, I didn't take any photos of Milo in the water, but I do have a couple more videos from the dog swim, including a guy going down a slide with his dog. You can check them out here. You can also check out my other photos from the dog swim here.
How do your pets react to water? Are they in it before you even know it's there? Or are they more like Milo where they want nothing to do with it?
Tell me your pet swimming stories and if you went to the dog swim, let me know about your experience! Write a comment below and make sure to "Like" Milo's Facebook page and share pictures and videos on the wall.
