KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) -- A man has lost both legs after falling into a tire shredder while at work at a Kansas City tire recycling center.

Kansas City Fire Department spokesman James Garrett says co-workers already had pulled the man from the machine when firefighters and ambulance crews arrived around 10:30 a.m.

Garrett says the victim was helping perform maintenance on the machine at ABC Tire Recycling near downtown Kansas City when he got caught in it.

Garrett says the man's legs were mangled by the machine and had to be amputated at a hospital. He wasn't identified and Garrett says he didn't know the man's condition late Monday afternoon.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.
