The Perseids meteor shower will dazzle the skies tonight as debris from the Comet Swift-Tuttle enters the earth’s atmosphere.
The meteor shower started July, 31, 2009 when the earth entered the comet’s debris stream. Earth was on the outskirts of the debris stream, but will pass through the densest part tonight, at night fall, until sunrise tomorrow morning.
The perseids, debris falling from the comet, can appear anywhere in the sky. However, the tail will always point to the shower’s radiant point in the Perseus constellation.
Here are some tips to catch the best of the show:
- Grab a blanket and lie down on a patch of ground that is far from the city lights
- Don’t stare at the moon tonight, it will ruin the night vision needed to see the shower
- Try to catch the show during the early evening hours tonight from 9 to 11, there will be less light from the moon during that time.
