St. Mary’s was opened in 1905 as part of a faith-based healing ministry of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary. From just 38 patient rooms, the city’s first hospital has grown to 167 beds, with numerous expansions and renovations through the years. Today nearly 1,200 employees plus affiliated physicians carry on the mission: Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Jefferson City was a thriving river town, both politically and culturally. For all the modern conveniences of a state capital, however, mid-Missourians seeking extended medical care traveled by river or trails to St. Louis or Kansas City.

Recognizing this need for a hospital, Reverend Otto J. Hoog, pastor of St. Peter’s Church, contacted the Archbishop of St. Louis, Most Reverend John J. Kain, who requested the Sisters of St. Mary to undertake the project. The Sisters of St. Mary had a legacy of providing for the poor and the sick, and Reverend Mother Mary Seraphia Schloctermeyer graciously agreed.

In late 1902, the church with the planning Jefferson City’s first hospital entrusted the Sisters of St. Mary, a religious order founded by Mother Mary Odelia and known today as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary.

Mr. And Mrs. Jacob F. Moerschel donated the land for the new hospital and a dollar to the Sisters in a deed that reads, “One dollar and love and affection for the Sisters of St. Mary’s and the feeling we have for the suffering of mankind.”

With this donation the Sisters began raising necessary funds to construct the hospital. A temporary hospital, consisting of two rooms for medical treatment and wooden boxes for tables and chairs, was established in a house on Elm Street in April 1904.

The cornerstone of the new $60,000 St. Mary’s Hospital was laid in May 1904, by the Very Reverend Otto J. Hoog, Vicar General. On October 1905, Jefferson City’s three-story hospital was dedicated by Archbishop John J. Glennon of St. Louis. Jefferson City now had its first hospital, a modern facility with 38 patient rooms, a pharmacy, operating rooms, x-ray, and consultation rooms.

Nearly a century of providing exceptional health care has brought many changes to St. Mary’s Hospital, including a name change. Today, St. Mary’s Health Center is a faith-based, world-class, full service hospital with 167 beds, extensive cardiology and open-heart surgery, a maternal and child care center, an oncology center, and a network of primary care clinics, as well as Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility.

St. Mary's has evolved to meet the demands of its patient population and the increasing complexity of health care. The physical structure of the hospital reflects this evolution. Construction and renovation represent St. Mary's Health Center’s commitment to acquiring the highest level of technology and increasing community demand for exceptional medical care. The first hospital in Jefferson City to offer open-heart surgery, St. Mary's has taken a lead role in bringing state-of-the-art health care home to the community it serves.

Growth and change have transformed the Sisters’ fledgling hospital into a firmly established leader in health care. Yet the cornerstone of St. Mary's philosophic foundation remains the same. It is a tremendous endeavor made possible through the support of the people who live in and around Jefferson City, who have helped to sustain the health center and to enrich the quality of care given.

Questions & Answers
Question
Do you offer any kind of financial assistance for your services?
Answer

St. Mary’s Health Center defines charitable or financial assistance care as that care rendered to customers unable to pay due to personal lack of finances. It would also include catastrophic health issues with requirements that preclude the ability of the individual to pay the rendered services, regardless of income bracket. Charitable or financial assistance care also includes non-covered services for public aid programs (Medicaid/Medicaid out of state and other programs for the indigent).

Charges that will be excluded from the free care apply to outpatient pharmacy and supplies and equipment for home use.

Persons eligible for free care will have the following "factors for consideration" applied before a final determination will be made:

1.  Available financial resources will be evaluated before determining financial assistance eligibility. All information obtained from patients and family members will be treated as confidential. Availability of funds includes but not limited to:

•  Saving
•  Investment
•  Credit availability
•  Other family member
•  Income from Wage
•  Income from self-employment
•  Alimony
•  Public Assistance
•  Social Security
•  Strike Benefit
•  Unemployment Compensation
•  Workers Compensation
•  Veteran Benefits
•  Pension
•  Child Support
•  Military family allotment
•  Other sources, such as income from dividends, interest or rental property

2.  Other assets, including the ability to borrow on insurance or property

3.  Potential change(s) in financial capability in the near future

4.  Type of care (costs) e.g. voluntary surgery versus true emergency

Any insurance benefit must be assigned to the hospital prior to application for charitable or financial assistance.
In order to evaluate and process the application for assistance the guarantor/obligator may be required to provide:

•  Most recently filed federal income tax form
•  Copies of current paycheck stubs
•  W2’s
•  Social Security Checks
•  Bank Statement

Question
How does St. Mary’s compare to other hospitals in the nation?
Answer

Founded in 1905 by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, St. Mary’s was the first hospital in Jefferson City and has continued its legacy as the area’s leading provider of health care.

It is the most preferred hospital in its market for a reason: St. Mary’s scores on quality care are in the top tier of hospitals nationwide, as shown by standard measurements of patient care.

Furthermore, surveys in 2007 showed that more than nine out of 10 St. Mary’s patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their care.

That commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed. St. Mary’s is a member of the St. Louis-based SSM Health Care System, the first health care organization in the nation to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
