Jefferson City is home to an award winning Parks and Recreation Department.

As the capital city of Missouri, maintaining our local parks and recreation facilities and implementing programs to meet the ever changing needs of our community and its visitors is a challenge. The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation strives to provide additional resources to leverage taxes, fees and grants to enhance our parks and recreation services.

Over the years, civic minded individuals and organizations have maintained a tradition of enhancing the quality of life for their families, friends, and neighbors through generous donations to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation system. In 1992, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation was formed to provide continuing leadership and foster the expansion of parks and recreation services in Jefferson City.

The Foundation’s goal is to emphasize the value of parks and recreation - both passive and active - not only for individual growth and development, but also for a strong family unit and for making our community a more desirable place to live, work, play and visit. If you believe, as we do, that wholesome recreation pursuits make individuals more productive in their homes and communities and lead to a healthier and happier life, please commit your support to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation. Land, trees, fountains, benches, shelters, activity fees for youth programs are all gifts that can make a difference in people’s lives. Any and all size gifts to our community are appreciated and contribute to the livability and quality of life of Jefferson City.

For more information on how you can make a tax deductible contribution of land, money, or other gifts, please contact the Foundation’s Executive Director William Lockwood at (573) 634-6482.

Questions & Answers
Question
How can I stay informed about your special events?
Answer
Keep up to date with what the Parks and Recreation Department offers by reading the weekly column in the Wednesday News Tribune Sports section. Each week the Parks and Recreation staff takes advantage of the community mindedness of the News Tribune to keep you informed of upcoming programs of interest. Also, Parks and Recreation hits the local airwaves the third Wednesday of each month at 8:05 a.m. Parks and Recreation representatives will bring you up to date on all Parks and Recreation programs, facilities and improvements. Tune in to 950 KWOS AM for this monthly update.
Question
Do your facilities provide assistance for children from low income families?
Answer

The Parks and Recreation Commission believes that no youth should be denied access to Parks and Recreation programs for financial reasons. The Parks and Recreation Foundation makes recreation sponsorships available to those who otherwise would not be able to afford to participate in organized recreation activities. Those seeking sponsorships will be asked to complete a Recreation Sponsorship Application Form available through the Department of Parks and Recreation. Sponsorships are generally limited to those receiving benefits from a form of public assistance as designated on the application form. Sponsorship funding is limited to three programs per individual per season, and is restricted to ongoing programs conducted by Parks and Recreation staff. Specialized programs of short duration conducted by non-staff members (e.g. baseball clinics) are ineligible for sponsorship funding.

Sponsorship assistance will be provided for only one session per season of the same program. All application forms requesting funding for youth programs must be signed by the parent/guardian of the prospective participant. Participants/parents must pay a minimum of 10% of the registration fee for programs for which sponsorship assistance is requested. Questions concerning this service should be directed to Phil Stiles at (573) 634-6482.

Question
Can you tell me more about the Ice Skating Institute?
Answer

We offer lessons and programs for all ages!

All basic skills and freestyle lessons are 30 minutes in length. The power skating class, offered on Monday nights, is 15 minutes in length. The basic skills lessons include a 15 minute practice in between the two class times for any skater enrolled in the session. Each session of lessons includes five public session passes. Registrations are accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis at the Parks and Recreation office by mail, fax, phone or hand delivery. For your convenience, we will also take your registration at the Washington Park Ice Arena. Parks and Recreation cannot guarantee the availability of rental skates in all sizes.

Question
My family and friends love the facilities you offer. Can I purchase a gift certificate?
Answer
Of Course! They are the perfect gift!
Available at our office in the City Annex, Parks and Recreation gift certificates can be purchased for as little as $5 and are good at any of our facilities or toward the registration fee for any program.
Question
What if there is an emergency while I am visiting your facilities?
Answer
WE CAN HELP!
Most Parks and Recreation crews and/or vehicles are equipped with radios or cell phones which can serve as an emergency reporting station for people needing help. Our personnel can notify local emergency services of any requests for assistance.
