COLUMBIA, MO. -- Crews extinguished a large grass fire near the intersection of Highway 64 and Highway AC in about 20 minutes Wednesday afternoon.

Units from the Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District arrived just after 2 p.m. to heavy smoke drifting across the north and southbound lanes of Highway 63 between Highway AC and the the Discovery Parkway exit. The fire was on the west side of the interstate.

Fire crews deployed pre-connected hoselines and rakes to put out the fire. One fire engine, one ladder truck and a specialty foam truck from the Columbia Fire Department responded, as did three units from the Boone County Fire Protection District.

Officials haven't determined yet what caused the fire, although it may have started as a result of sparks from a vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 63.
