Sclerotherapy
This non-surgical procedure for eliminating small varicose and spider veins takes 30-60 minutes and is performed in the office by our team of sclerotherapy nurses and physicians. Sclerotherapy works by injecting a special solution into the problem vein(s) them to close down and disappear. Because most patients receive numbing cream or numbing spray before the treatment, this procedures is virtually pain less and patients can immediately resume regular activity.
The most common treatment for both spider veins and varicose veins, a needle is used to inject a liquid chemical into the vein. This causes the vein walls to swell, stick together, and seal shut. The vein turns into scar tissue and in a few weeks, should fade. This treatment does not require anesthesia, can be done in office and patients can return to normal activity right after treatment.
The same vein may need to be treated more than once, usually in 4 to 6 weeks. This treatment is very effective when done correctly.

While no needles or incisions are used, the heat from the laser can sometimes be uncomfortable. Laser treatments last for 15 to 20 minutes. Generally, 2 to 5 treatments are needed to remove spider veins in the legs. Laser therapy usually isn’t effective for varicose veins larger than 3 mm (about a tenth of an inch). Patients can return to normal activity immediately after treatment.
