If you have experienced digestive problems in the past, you know how uncomfortable and painful they can be. Whether you have experienced diarrhea or any other digestive condition, it is no fun. Usually, these problems occur when harmful bacteria gets in food or may be caused by infection, stress, some medications, or chronic medical conditions such as colitis, Crohn’s disease and IBS.

Some people may schedule their activities around bathroom breaks or limit their activities in public and turn down invitations for fear of having an accident. You shouldn’t let these occurrences stop you from living a happy, enjoyable and fulfilling life.

Here are 10 tips you can use to cope with digestive problems:

1) Fully understand your digestion treatment plan. Your doctor will do a full analysis of your condition and determine the reasons for it followed by prescribing a treatment plan. This may include medication, eliminating certain foods, and beginning new habits. It is your job to understand what you should and should not do.
2) Realize your digestive triggers. Ask yourself, what foods and beverages seem to upset your stomach? Which medications seem to spark a flare up and which medications help? Do certain situations or events seem to trigger a problem? Keep a journal to record the answers to all these questions.
3) A balanced diet helps. By eating right, you can help maintain a stable digestive tract minimizing your system’s flare ups when they do occur. Gradually increase your fiber and eat several small meals during the day.
4) Stay hydrated. Water is vital for good health and normal bowel function. Water also keeps stools soft, but solid and well-formed. When you have a bout of diarrhea, make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid becoming dehydrated.
5) Practice healthy hygiene. Make sure to thoroughly wash your hands after you go to the bathroom. Otherwise, it is much easier for harmful bacteria to get into your system and cause a digestive problem.
6) Prepare for digestive emergencies. Accidents can happen and you should plan ahead for them.  Keep some emergency supplies handy when one of these unexpected accidents occurs. Discrete and portable packaging are best for items such as medication, pre-moistened wipes, an extra pair of underwear, disposable pads, and plastic bags to dispose soiled wipes and clothes.
7) Manage stress better. Stress can cause your digestive system to flare up. Exercise, yoga, meditation or a favorite hobby can help minimize stress.
8) Seek support. Don’t hide your digestive problems from loved ones. Help them understand when and how they affect you. There are plenty of support groups available for sufferers that can help you avoid isolating yourself by giving you ideas, answers and general support.
9) Take charge. Join your doctor in fully understanding your condition. Ask him or her questions about your treatment as well. Keep track of your experiences and bring them up at your next visit to the doctor.
10) Beware of miracle cures. Some alternative treatments do show plenty of promise such as colon cleansing and fasting, however, they can also be expensive, ineffective or even dangerous. Always consult your doctor before trying an alternative plan or treatment.

Remember that you don’t have to let life pass you by because of a digestive condition. Tackle the issue and conquer it by following these 10 tips for a better life. If you don’t, you may miss out on some very important and memorable events.
