ST. LOUIS -- According to a new study released by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Missouri's working poor are unfairly taxed.

The report shows that poor families face substantial state income tax liability.

A spokesperson for the group says a single mother of two who earns just $14,000 a year is taxed at the same rate as a millionaire. The group wants legislators to change Missouri's tax system to make it more fair, so those who earn less can pay less taxes

Officials with the local group Central Missouri Community Action agree, the tax code is unfair.

"Poor families who are struggling with the crisis of poverty are really impacted pretty heavily by our tax code in Missouri,” said Darin Preis, executive director of the Central Missouri Community Action organization. “Those costs are the same from household to household regardless of income, and that makes a disproportionate burden on those households when you look at energy costs or food costs or transportation costs."

There are an estimated 780,000 Missourians who live in poverty.
