TigerCon 2011
Local Scale Model Club Presents Inaugural ContestCOLUMBIA, Mo.—Building scale models is a hobby that takes a lot of practice, time and skill, so one local club is planning a contest to showcase the best creations. Central Missouri Scale Modelers is hosting its inaugural model contest, TigerCon 2011, on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Parkade Center, 601 Business Loop W. The club’s members wanted to start a contest to build awareness of the hobby and to show off some of the area’s best modelers. “Offering a competition and show exposes more people to the hobby,” says Scott Adams, a CMSM member. “We want to attract young modelers as well as adults who have rediscovered the passion they enjoyed as kids.” All entries will be judged by a panel of experts and prizes will be awarded in 31 categories, from automotive to aircraft to diorama. Awards for “Best of Show” and “People’s Choice” will also be presented, as well as prizes for junior competitors. The contest entrance fee is only $10, and admission is free. Even with the changing world of technology and the new hobbies that come with it, building scale models remains a popular pastime. “While a very individual pastime spent in a quiet area of our homes, modeling offers a great opportunity to express ourselves through painstaking attention to detail,” Adams says. Adams started modeling when he was about seven years old and kept at it until his early teens. “I picked it up again about twelve years ago as my son became interested,” Adams says. “Now it’s my great escape for relaxation.” Central Missouri Scale Modelers is where modelers of all ages can get together on a regular basis to talk about and practice their favorite hobby: scale modeling. It is open to all scale model enthusiasts who have a passion for scale modeling of any kind, including cars, aircraft, figures, ships, real space or sci-fi. The group has discussions and guest demonstrations at each session, and will offer anyone who attends the opportunity to share projects they have on their plate. The club meets on the second Thursday of each month, alternating between Columbia and Boonville. The club is excited about the first competition. Adams says he thinks the community will enjoy seeing the skill of local modelers, and he hopes the contest will continue in the years to come. “Competitions inspire modelers to take their skills to the next level. While we are still a small club, our members have done quite well in regional and national competitions where we have also learned a lot about running a first class competition. We are very committed to putting on a great show that modelers will have on their calendar every year.”TigerCon 2011 Schedule of EventsCompetitions inspire modelers to take their skills to the next level.
